Abstract

1,206,510. Coated metal strip. L. O. SWARTZ. 22 Oct., 1968 [10 Sept., 1968], No. 50115/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Division D1] A metal strip is coated by passing the strip in a continuous path through a coating station, a coating containing a liquid diluent applied to at least one surface of the strip, and through a heating station where heat is induced in that portion of the strip which passes there-through by electro-magnetic induction the heat being sufficient to initiate curing of the coating while effecting vapourization of the liquid diluent, the vapourised liquid being restrained from flowing downstream of the path of travel of the strip after the strip leaves the heating station, then progressively cooling the coated strip from a point adjacent the heating station to a point remote therefrom. The vapourised diluent may be condensed in the area of the heating station and the condensed diluent removed from the system. In the Figure a low carbon steel 12 is passed from a coil 14 and then between a pair of pinch rollers 18 and through a series of pretreating operations. The first of these is performed in apparatus 20 where sprays 22 of alkali solution are projected against both sides of the strip and the strip is then scrubbed and cleaned by scrubbing rolls 24 while the strip is supported by back-rollers 26. The strip is then guided by pinch rollers 28 into apparatus 30 where the strip is raised by sprays 32 and smoothed by abrasive wheels 34 supported by back-up rollers 36. The strip is then guided to apparatus 40 where the strip is provided with a chemical coating to condition the strip for the application of the paint by means of rollers 42. It is then passed successively through rinsing apparatus 44, drying means 46 and auxiliary drying and levelling means 48 and 50 and then around roller 52 and is provided with a coating of paint by means of rollers 54 and 56. After the paint has been applied to both sides of the strip it passes through induction heating coil 58. The coiled unit 60 is enclosed in the circuit to vary the current and temperature as desired. Recorder 62 records the temperature at any particular instant in response to a sensing device 63. Vapourised solvent is drawn through a hood 64 overlying the coil 58 by means of a blower 71. The solvent is condensed by the coil 67 and flows through the depending portion 65 and the conduit 72 to a recovery tank 74. Uncondensed vapours are drawn through duct 76 to an after burner 78. The strip is then passed around an internally water-cooled roller 80 and then successively around rollers 82 and 84 which are also internally water-cooled. The coated strip finally passes over rollers 96 to a coil 98 to be re-coiled at 100.
