Abstract

In forming metal coatings on metal strip by electrophoretically depositing the coating metal from a suspension of finely divided coating metal, drying the coated strip to remove entrained electrophoresis medium, rolling the coated strip to compact the coating, and then heating the strip to obtain a tightly bonded coating, the strip is passed in a straight pass to a roll having a surface to which the coating is non-adherent, e.g. chromium- or nickel-plated steel, polythene or P.T.F.E., the strip being dried in said straight pass to a liquid content of 20-75% by weight of the coating, at which stage the coating is sufficiently coherent to be contacted by the roll to cause change of direction of the strip so that it passes to the drying station and compacting rolls. The reduction of liquid content of the coating is effected by means of air knives across the strip width impinging at an acute angle, e.g. 30 degrees, to reduce drag-out loss, together with radiant heaters, and final drying is effected with hot air or gas or by radiant heating. The electrophoresis bath is the same as that in Specification 979,948 and the suspension is maintained and solvent is recovered as in that Specification. The consolidating heat treatment of the compacted coating is effected on the coiled strip. Specification 884,797 also is referred to.
