Abstract

1,200,212. Electro-depositing molybdenum oxide. DOW CORNING CORP. Aug. 8, 1967 [Nov.17, 1966], No.36345/67. Heading C7B, A lubricating film is formed on a cleaned metallic surface by coating the surface with a pre-plate of Ag, Cu, brass, Zn, Ni and/or Sb, electro-depositing on the pre-plate a 50-500 micro-inch thick layer of molybdenum oxide complex, preferably from a molybdate or molybdic acid solution, and placing the coated surface in an H2S atmosphere at 150-177‹ C. and 2À32-2À81 Kg/sq cm for 1-3 hours. For coating a surface of Al, Ti or an alloy thereof, a Zn pre-plate is preferred; for other surfaces e.g. of steel pins or blocks, a Cu or brass pre-plate e.g. from a CuSO4 -H2SO4 solution followed by a Ag pre-plate e.g. from a AgNO3 -NH4OH-Na2S2O3 is preferred. Prior to pre-plating the surface may be degreased, vapour blasted with alumina powder, immersed in an alkali or anodic cleaning solution, then in concentrated HCl. The plating may be effected in an electrolyte of sodium molybdate and ammonium acetate containing a wetting agent and acetic acid adjust the pH to 5À8, at a current density of 0À033 amp / sq in and using the surface as a cathode. U.S.A. Specification 2, 902, 417 is referred to.
