Abstract

1,180,409. Electro-depositing polytetrafluorethylene. FARBWERKE HOECHST A. G. Oct. 17, 1967 [Oct. 17, 1966; Nov. 24, 1966(2)], No. 47242/67. Heading C7B. Crack- and water-free coatings of PTFE are produced on a metallic surface, e. g. of brass, Cu, steel, A1 (preferably phosphated or chromated), Cr or Ni plate or wire, by anodic electro-phoretic deposition from an aqueous dispersion of PTFE e. g. 5-250 g/ 1, which incorporates a fluorinated surface active agent in an amount of 0.001-1 g/1 of the dispersion after polymerization, preferably a perfluorinated carboxylic (e. g. perfluorobutyric or -caprylic) and/or organic sulphonic acid or a water soluble salt (e. g. alkali metal or ammonium) thereof, and sintering the deposited PTFE preferably at 340-380‹ C. in an inert atmosphere e.g. of N 2 . For a brass or Cu surface, the aqueous dispersion preferably further contains an anodic passivating agent, e. g. 0.1-10 g/ 1 of potassium ferricyanide or ferrocyanide in ammoniacal solution to bring the pH of the dispersion to 10À5-11À5. A steel surface is preferably degreased with trichlorethylene and pickled in mixed HNO 3 + HF acid prior to the deposition. An al surface may be treated in a 10% NaOH solution, then in a solution containing 50 g/ 1 Na 2 C0 3 and 30 g/ 1 Na 2 Cr0 4 prior to the deposition.
