1,199,389. Frecze drying. SOC. D'ETUDE ET D'EXPLOITATION DE PROCEDES pour L'INDUSTRIE ALIMENTAIRE SEPIAL 10 Dec., 1968 [21 Feb., 1968], No. 58737/68. Heading F4G. A freeze drying horizontal cylindrical vacuum chamber contains heating plates 17 mounted on cars 8, 9 and a condensation unit which comprises two symmetrical groups 4, 5 of vertical condensation plates 6 positioned on each side of a vertical diametral plane of the chamber, each plate being individually movable about a vertical axis. Each group of plates 6 may be divided into sections and the angle of inclination of the plates may be different in different sections. Each plate 6 has the shape of a truncated sector of a circle and comprises a number of compartments 25 communicating through openings 26 to provide a sinuous flow path for the refrigerant. Each plate 6 has a shaft end 29 which engages in a notch 37 on bar 35 mounted on plane surface 33 and a bush or disc bearing on plane surface 32 and engaging in notch 36 in bar 34. The condensation unit is thermally insulated from the wall of the vacuum chamber and the heating plates by respectively, metal sheets and metal screens, the screens comprising tiltable slats. Vacuum is maintained in the chamber by means of pipes 41 connected to a pump (not shown). The material to be dried is carried on trays 11 on cars 7, the trays 11 meshing with the heating plates 17.
