Abstract

1,198,165. Ships' auxiliary propulsion device. K. G. B. THORDEN. 18 April, 1968 [19 April, 1967], No. 18322/68. Heading B7V. An auxiliary propulsion device for manoeuvring a ship at low speed comprises a rod 3 (reciprocated by a piston 5, Fig. 1), a plate 8 pivoted on an axis 7 at right angles to a symmetry axis of the plate to the rod, and a stopper 16 (Fig. 3a) articulated to the plate (by a rod 18) and to a port 2 connected to the ship for permitting limited oscillating movement of the plate, the stopper being between the pivot 7 and the inflow edge of the plate (Figs. 3a, 3b), which pivot and edge lie on the same side of the centre of gravity TP of the surface of the plate, the arrangement being such that, as shown in Fig. 3d, the inflow edge of the plate abuts the shell plating of the ship when the rod is in its outermost position and the stopper is in its operative position. Means are provided for turning the pivot 7 with respect to the longitudinal direction of the ship. In Fig. 1 this means comprises a gear 13 in mesh with a pinion 14 on an operating shaft 15. The rotatable gear 13 is formed with a sleeve 12 with grooves 11 in which engage longitudinal splines 10 on the rod 3. The cylinder 17 of the stopper is connected to the gear 13.
