Abstract

573,359. Propelling, steering, stabilizing and manoeuvring ships. WILSON, A., and BRAD.Y, H. W. Dec. 11, 1943, No. 20774. [Class 114] A propelling, steering, manoeuvring and stabilizing mechanism for ships comprises pairs of fins oscillating on parallel axes with means for simultaneously altering the mean angular positions of the pair in the same direction for steering &c. and in opposite directions for speed variation &c. Fig. 8 shows means for varying the mean position of the oscillating blade 4, comprising a hand wheel actuating a worm to shift a toothed wheel 12 engaging a wheel 11 loose on the spindle 3 of the blade, which wheel meshes with a wheel 8 engaging a wheel 9 driving a wheel 10 keyed on the spindle ; the wheels 8, 9 are carried by a lever rocked by a connecting-rod to oscillate the blade. Fig. 10 shows epicyclic gearing for a pair of blades which may be rotated equally in the same direction by a steering wheel 16, or equally in opposite directions to vary or reverse the speed by racks 31, 31<1>. Blades may be secured on slidable spindles or sleeves so that they can be raised through a trap into a chamber for replacement. In the case of a submarine, the blades may be horizontally pivoted for submersion &c. To diminish rolling of surface vessels, horizontally pivoted lateral blades may be provided, the mean angular positions of which are automatically variable by pendulum or gyrostatic mechanism. The stroke of the connecting rods may be variable. Blades may be located both at the bow and stern.
