Abstract

1,195,989. Edge-coating of webs. FUJI SHASHIN FILM K.K. 21 Nov., 1967 [22 Nov., 1966], No. 52976/67. Heading D1L. [Also in Division B2] Both side-edges of a web are coated, by bending the web transversely into a U-shape and applying the coating composition to the side-edges. In Figures 1 and 2, a continuously moving web 1 is deformed by a roller 10 pressing the film into the concave peripheries of rolls 2. The side-edges 3 and 4 of the web are aligned by means of a roll 5 and brought into contact with surfaces 8, 9 of a coating roller 6. The roll 2 may be an idler roll, or an endless belt moveable with the web or a suction belt. The coating applicator may alternatively be a gravure coating system, an extrusion coating system, or a pen contact system. The web may be a film of plastics material, or a sheet or strip of paper or metal. The edges of a photographic negative film having a coating of a gelatino silver halide photographic emulsion on a polyethylene terephthalate film were coated with ink using the coating device shown in Figures 1 and 2.
