Abstract

1,188,972. Extruding. DAVY & UNITED ENG. CO. Ltd. 20 March, 1968 [23 March, 1967], No. 13677/67. Heading B3P. An extrusion press has a platen 3 disposed downstream of the single billet container 4 into which billets 20 are loaded through a cavity 9 in the platen. The cavity houses a transverse slide 10 for the die carrier 11 and intermediate bolster 12 and another transverse slide 13 for the back bolster 14. The slides are moved by separate cylinders 15 and have a hole or preferably a U-shaped channel 18 for receiving a hot billet 20 and possibly a dummy block 7 from a tray 21 extending from a furnace. The slides 10, 13 are then moved transversely to align the billet with the container bore into which it is pushed by a cylinder 23 carried by the slide 13. During extrusion of the billet by press stem 6 and dummy block 7, the extruded product passes into a guide tube 26. After extrusion, the slide 13 or both slides are moved transversely to shear off the discard. Alternatively a separate shear may be provided to move across the rear face of the die after withdrawal of the container. Platen 3 is connected to four tie rods 2 of square section. Container 4 is movable axially by cylinders (5), Fig. 1 (not shown), to facilitate removal of the discard and dummy block. The slide 10 may be replaced by a rotary member.
