Abstract

1,146,151. Extruding. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 23 March, 1966 [23 March, 1965], No. 12326/65. Heading B3P. A continuous solid billet 23 is hydrostatically extruded from a pressure chamber 2 through a die 25, and further lengths of billet are admitted to the pressure chamber through an opening 14 which is sealed during extrusion. The billet is fed into the chamber by feed rolls 18 and is then gripped by a split or deformable collet 13 actuated by an hydraulic ram. The leading end of the billet is shaped at (21), (22), Fig. 1 (not shown), to fit into the die orifice. A seal (16), Fig. 1 (not shown), prevents escape of pressure liquid from the chamber. The liquid, which may be a mixture of methyl alcohol and castor oil, is pressurized by a plunger 24 carrying the die 25 and actuated by an hydraulic ram 28. This causes extrusion through the die and tube 30 to traction rolls 36. Seals 26 of beryllium copper with rubber 0-rings are provided for the plunger 24 and the end cap 3. The pressurized liquid may also act upon the outside of the die to support it during extrusion. Make-up liquid is supplied through duct 38 and valve 37. The extruded product may pass directly into a second or through a series of similar extrusion devices. Several billets may be extruded simultaneously through separate dies in the chamber which may be rotated during charging. Extrusion may be performed at elevated temperatures. In an alternative embodiment both the inlet and outlet passages are formed in oppositely moving plungers. Deforming members such as rolls or forging platens may act upon the billet within the pressure chamber. A futher billet may be included on the end of the existing billet to provide continuous extrusion. The apparatus may be controlled automatically by sensing means for the length of billet in the chamber or for the length of extruded product. In another embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), the die (8) is stationary and high pressure liquid is admitted to the chamber through duct (5).
