Application met me 1a, 1924, Serial No. 720,005, and in Great Britain January 17, 1924.
This invention relates'to that type of extrusion press in which the metal of a billet carried a container is extruded through a die to form a rod or the like (hereinafter termed rod) by e fi'ecting' relative movement between the said container and the said die.
Hitherto, the die has been located apart from the container and formed on "or fixed to the lower end of a stationary tubular member, the said container being closed at its lower or rear end and the billetpassed thereinto by way of its open upper or forward end prior to effecting the extrusionstroke. I
Now the object of this present invention is to provide an improved extrusion press, as hereinafter described, for forming rods-from metal billets, whereby the extrusion defects due to skin friction are reduced to a ruinimum and the power required to extrude the rod is substantially lessened. In an extrusion press according to this invention for forming rods from metal billets, the die and metal billet are passed into a container by way of its open rear end until the die comes to rest against the rear end of a stationary tubular plunger projecting into the forward end of said container and the open rear end of the container is then sealed and the sealed container moved forwardly upon the stationary tubular plunger so as to extrude the metal of the billet through the stationary supported die to form a rod.
In a convenient form of construction, the die and metal billet are first moved together forwardly into the container by a pusher bar until the die comes to rest against the rear end of a stationary tubular plunger pro ecting into the forward end of said container, the open rear endof which is now sealed by :a gag piece and the sealed container moved forwardly upon the stationary tubular {plunger so as to extrude the metal ofthe 'Qbil'let through the stationarily supported die to form .a rod which is projected forwardly throu h the stationary tubular plunger dure forward travel of the sealed container. The forward travel or extrusion stroke of the sealed container is such as to leave a residual piece of metal on the-rear fend of the formed rod, and after such extrus'ion stroke the container minus its gag piece is moved further forward upon the stationary tubular plunger so as to leave the residual endof the rodv clear of therea-r end of the container to enable the residual piece of metal to be removed from the formed rod and the latter to be drawn out from the press.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings;
wherein':--
Figs. 1 and 2 are respectively a sectional plan view and a part sectional side elevation of a hydraulic extrusion press in accordance with this invention; while Figs. 3 to 12 inclusive are sectional plan views of a part of the same press illustrating the various stages in the manufacture of a rod.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, 1 is a receiver, 2 the die, 3 the metal billet, 4 the container, 5 the pusher bar, 6 the stationary tubular plunger, 7 the gag piece, 8 double-acting rams, 9 a main ram, 10 clamps,.11 draw-back rams, and 12 a saw.
Referring now particularly to Figs. 3 to I 12 of the drawings, the die 2 and the metal billet 3 are first placed in the receiver 1 versely so as to bring the die 2 and metal billet 3 into alignment with the container 4 (Fig. 4), after which the die 2 and metal billet 3 are together moved forwardly by the pusher bar 5 into the container 4 until the die 2 comes to-rest against the rear end of the stationary tubular plunger 6 which projects into the forward end of said container 4 (Fig. 5), whereupon the pusher bar 5 is withdrawn and the gag piece 7 moved trans versely so as to bring it into alignment with the open rear end of the container 4 (Fig. (3). e
The container 4 is now moved rearwardly through the medium of the double-acting rams 8 up against the gag piece 7 so as to seal the open rear end ofthe said container 4 (Fig.7 and also Fig. 1), when the sealed container 4 is moved forwardly upon the when the receiver 1 is moved trans-' stationary tubular plunger 6 by the main ram 9 so as to extrude the metal of the billet 3 through the stationary die 2 to form a rod 3 which is projected forwardly through'the stationary tubular plunger C) during the forward travel of the sealed container 4, the stroke of the main ram 9 being such as to leave a residual piece of metal 3 on the rear end of the formed rod 3 (F ig. 8). The double-acting rams 8 now move the container 4 further forward upon the stationary tubular plunger 6 so as to leave the residual piece of metal?) of the rod 3* clear of the rear end of the container 4 (Fig. 9), when the gagipiece 7 is moved transversely so as to bring the clamps 10 into alignment with the residual piece of metal 3 on the rear end of the rod 3 (Fi 10), after which the clamps 10 are moved orwardly by the main ram 9 and screwed up upon the residual piece of metal 3 on the rear end of the rod 3* (Fig. 11), whereupon the clamps 10 and parts associated therewith are movedrearwardly by the draw-back rams 11 so as to Withdraw the residual piece of metal 3 together with the rod 3 and die 2 rearwardly clear of the container 4 (Fig. 12). The saw 12 is now lowered and the formed rod 3 severed thereby from the residual piece of metal 3 when tllQ'fOIlIlQd rod 33 is free to be drawn out forwardly from the press by way of the stationary tubular plunger 6. a
