Abstract

1,186,453. Protective arrangements. M-O VALVE CO. Ltd., J. GOWAR, and K. G. COOK. 17 Oct., 1968 [3 Nov., 1967], No. 50182/67. Heading H2K. [Also in Division H1] A load 31 is protected from drawing excess current by a device 30 comprising anode 2, cathode 4, grid 3 and baffle 5 which normally permits the passage of an anode/cathode discharge but which obstructs the discharge when a magnetic field produced by coil 27 is present. Anode 2 is connected in series with load 31, a pulse generator 32 and with the power supply. Since grid 3 is normally held negative with respect to the anode the discharge in device 30 may only be started by applying a positive pulse across transformer 43. A pulse is produced from pulse generator 32 when the load current exceeds a predetermined value; this pulse fires a thyratron 35 causing capacitor 39 to discharge through coil 27 which produces a pulse of magnetic field, e.g. having a duration of 60 microseconds and a peak value of 1 kilogauss, sufficient to extinguish the discharge in device 30. The discharge remains extinguished until a positive pulse is once again applied to grid 3.
