Abstract

1,179,017. Electrodepositing smooth ductile gold. ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP. Feb. 21, 1967 [Feb. 23, 1966], No.8283/67 Heading C7B. Smooth ductile yellow pure gold deposits are electro-plated from aqueous solutions of pH5 to 8 comprising per litre 4 to 50 gms. alkali metal gold cyanide, 10 to 200 gms. of an alkali metal pyrophosphate, 10 to 100 gms. of a pH adjusting acid, and 0.2 to 10 mgms. of a trivalent arsenic compound e. g. As 2 O 3 . The plating bath may also contain 1 to 110 gms/litre of a conducting salt of an organic acid such as the ammonium sodium or potassium salts of citric acid. The pH adjusting acid may phosphoric, polyphosphoric, boric, formic or tartaric acid but preferably is superphosphoric acid containing 72 to 85% by weight of P 2 O 5 . Acid salts such as ammonium citrate or monopotassium phosphate may also be used. Preferably the cyanide and pyrophosphate are the potassium salt and the pH is raised if required with potassium pyrophosphate or hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide and the baths are used at 45 to 65‹ C. with current densities of 3 to 10 amps. /sq. ft. and agitation of the bath to give deposits of thicknesses up to 0.05 inch.
