Abstract

1,174,423. Evaporators, multiple-effiect; desalination of sea water. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 6 July, 1967 [6 July, 1966], No. 30434/66. Heading B1B. Sea water is desalinated in a multiple-effect evaporator, comprising both backward and forward stages, wherein the steam produced in the last effect 17k of the backward stage 11 is employed to heat the first effect 18a of the forward stage 12. The preheated sea water is passed through line 14 into the last effect of stage 11, the brine effluent from the first effect of stage 11 is passed through line 16 into the first effect of stage 12, and heat-exchange between the feed water and the brine takes place in heat-exchanger 15. A controlled proportion of the feed water may be by-passed through line 19 and valve 20 directly into line 16. The feed water is preheated in heat-exchanger 10 by the product (fresh water) withdrawn into line 24 from the calandrias of the effects of both stages.
