Abstract

1,061,519. Distillation of water. BARNSTEAD STILL & STERILIZER CO. Dec. 21, 1965. No. 54220/65. Heading BIB. The formation of scale in the distillation of water, containing scale-forming salts, is reduced or eliminated by dividing the water-tobe-distilled into two streams, one of which is passed through a cation exchanger 10, the exchange material of which contains hydrogen ions, before the water is introduced into the still 12, while the other stream is introduced into the still without such treatment. As shown this second stream is passed as cooling-medium through coil 18 in condenser 16 before it is introduced into the still. Distilled water is withdrawn from the condenser through outlet 20. The flow rates of the two streams of feed water are adjusted by valves 28 and 30 so that the pH in the water in the still is maintained between 5.5 and 7.5. The feed water may contain phosphates, sulphates, chlorides and nitrates.
