Abstract

1,083,637. Distilling sea water; multiple-effect evaporators. F. P. ZAOSTROVSKY, V G. SHAT SILLO; S. I. GOLUB; V. B. CHERNOZUBOV; E. P. NOVIKOV and V. I. TKACH. Oct. 22, 1964, No. 43093/64. Heading B1B. Sea water is distilled in a tubular-type multiple effect-evaporator in the presence of at least 8 grams per litre of added calcium carbonate to prevent scale forming. The sea water circulates through each evaporator at a rate of at least 1 metre per second, and the boiling temperature does not exceed 115‹C. The evaporation is so effected that the water does not undergo more than 4 fold concentration. The sea water feed cools a condenser 1 before being pumped through preheaters 9 where it is freed from dissolved gases, to the first of four evaporators 3. Steam from a power station heats the first evaporator, its condensate being returned to the station. The steam from the first evaporator heats the second and so on, the steam from the last evaporator being condensed at 1 and pumped to the consumer together with the condensate from the heating steam in the last three evaporators. The thick liquor from the last evaporator passes to a clarifier 4 where the calcium carbonate which has caused crystallization of the salts in the sea water, is separated out and refed to the feed line.
