Abstract
1,174,038. Cathode-ray tubes; electron multipliers. NORTHROP CORP. 29 July, 1968, No. 36130/68. Heading H1D. A cathode-ray tube comprises a control electrode 19 and a plurality of dynodes 20-25 arranged between an extended cathode 16 and a target 11, electrodes 19-25 having aligned apertures and the dynodes 20-25 each being provided with a pair of mutually insulated conductive coatings (e.g. 25a and 25b) connected to a flip-flop (53) and arranged in patterns such that electrons pass through only one set of aligned apertures in accordance with the setting of the control flip-flops 48-53. The electrodes 19-25 are preferably of glass with metal coatings arranged in patterns on both sides, and the apertures preferably form a zig-zag in the longitudinal direction (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) and may be lined with lead oxide or tin oxide. The cathode may be photoelectric or radio-active, and the electrodes may be assembled to form a flat stack. The target may be a fluorescent screen, an image sensor, or a storage device.
