Abstract
1,170,926. Reverse gear. FLUIDRIVE ENG. CO. Ltd. 25 Nov., 1966 [6 Dec., 1965], No. 51685/65. Heading F2D. In a reverse gear for a marine vessel, wherein two engines 9A, 9B drive a common output shaft 1, each engine always drives through a separate pinion 3A or 3B meshing an output pinion 2 and thus permits the tooth width of the latter to be reduced. As shown, engines 9A, 9B drive input shafts 8A, 8B in the same direction and fluid couplings 10A, 10B when filled respectively connect the shafts 8A, 8B to the pinions 3A, 3B for a forward ratio. For reverse ratio the fluid couplings 10A, 10B are emptied and fluid couplings 11A, 11B filled to connect the shafts 8A, 8B respectively through gears 6B, 5B; 6A, 5A to the pinions 3B, 3A. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the engines drive the input shafts in opposite directions and fluid couplings (10A, 10<1>B) respectively connect the shaft (8A) to the pinion 3A and connect the shaft (8<1>B) through gears (6<1>A, 5<1>A) to the pinion (3B) for forward ratio whilst for reverse ratio the couplings (11A, 11<1>B) connect the shaft (8A) through gears (6B, 5B) to the pinion (3B) and connect the shaft (8<1>B) directly to the pinion (3A). The fluid couplings may be replaced by controllable slip electromagnetically operated clutches. Two of the above reverse gear systems may drive a single output shaft.
