Abstract

1,163,583. Jointing by rolling. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 1 June, 1967 [16 June, 1966 (2)], Nos. 26888/66 and 26890/66. Heading B3M. [Also in Divisions F2 and G6] The end of a zirconium alloy tube 2 is joined to the end of a stainless steel tube 1 to form a nuclear reactor pressure tube, the joint being made by roll swaging the inner tube into grooves 3 provided in the outer one. A rolling tool 4 carries caged rollers 5 which are progressively expanded during rolling by a tapered mandrel 6. An external collar 7 can be used to support the tube 1. The rolling is performed at a temperature between 100‹ and 400‹ C. and preferably at 250‹ C., at which temperature the yield strength of zirconium alloy, but not of stainless steel, is reduced.
