Abstract

900,500. Shearing. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Oct. 28, 1960 [Dec. 3, 1959], No. 37109/60. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XL (a)] Apparatus for splitting metal tubes forming fuel element channels in a nuclear reactor to facilitate their removal from the graphite core comprises a body 10 adapted to be pulled by a cable (not shown) in the direction from right to left through one such tube 12, the body carrying a pair of cutter wheels 11 which penetrate the tube wall without cutting through it. An I- section blade 13 attached to an axial extension 22 of the body 10 has two cutting edges 27 followed by flanges 25, the edges 27 splitting the tube at the positions weakened by the wheels 11 and the flanges 25 bending the tube edges 30 inwardly. The tube 12 may have internal ribs 17a and these are received in corresponding grooves 17 formed in the body 10, whereby rotation of the splitting apparatus is prevented. The apparatus is connected to the pulling cable by a device disclosed in Specification 900,501. Specification 817,751 also is referred to.
