Abstract

1,155,833. Window stays and fasteners. ARCHIBALD KENRICK & SONS Ltd. 22 June, 1966 [16 July, 1965; 2 Aug., 1965; 3 Dec., 1965], Nos. 30254/65; 32920/65 and 51359/65. Headings E2A and E2F. A window fastener or stay is detachably pivoted on a mounting member by a snapfitting resilient member. The mounting member 10 consists of a plate or bracket having countersunk holes 12 for attachment to a casement frame, and a projecting pin 13 with a groove 13a. A lever member 11 for engagement in use with a suitable projection on the fixed frame of the window, has a terminal boss 14 bored to encircle the pin. The bore is countersunk at one end and counterbored at the other to give it a frusto-conical mouth 14b and a shoulder 14a. A resilient synthetic resin bush having flanks 17, an annular flange 18, an internal rib 20 and three longitudinal slits 19, is compressed and inserted into the bore, then released so that the flanks and flange engage respectively with the mouth 14b and the shoulder 14a, to retain the bush in the bore. The bush is then pushed over the pin 13 so that the rib 20 resiliently snap-fits into the groove 13a, to retain and provide a bearing for the lever. In an alternative embodiment, (Fig. 3), the resilient member is in the form of a cap retained in a recess in the upper part of the bore by peening over the adjacent walls thereof. The mouth of the cap has an internal rib which snap-fits into a groove near the end of the pin. In this case the bearing surface is provided by the wall of the bore, the resilient member serving as a retainer only. A window stay is preferably mounted via an intermediate connecting member, of which the one end is detachably pivoted to the frame mounting member as above and the other is permanently hinged to the stay. The permanent hinge is a knuckle joint type, a blade on the connecting member being pivotally mounted on a pin between bifurcations of the end portion of the stay member, providing hinge whose axis is perpendicular to that of the detachable pivot. The blade has an extension or shoulders co-acting with the stay to provide a supporting stop. The stay, fastener or connecting member may be detached from the pin by prising off with a suitable tool inserted between the boss and mounting member, the resilient member remaining in position in the boss.
