Abstract

1,001,305. Door handle fittings. B. LILLY & SONS Ltd. May 11, 1964 [May 21, 1963], No. 20072/63. Heading E2A. A lever type door handle comprises a lever handle member 4 carried by a shank 5 which is rotatably mounted in a boss 3 of a sheet metal fixing plate 1 adapted to be secured to the face of a door by screws, the shank 5 having in its rear end a non-circular hole 8 for receiving a latch operating spindle, and being acted upon by a return spring 15 which retains the handle member 4 in a normal inoperative position as determined by a stop part, and the fixing plate 1 being provided with a rearwardly projecting raised anchoring part 14 with which one end 16 of the spring 15 is engaged and thereby anchored, and which is located in the path of movement of a stop plate 11 secured on the shank 5, so as to act also as the fixed stop part for co-operating with said stop plate in order to retain the handle in a normal inoperative position after having been returned by the spring. In the embodiment shown the anchoring and stop part 14 is formed by cutting parallel slits in the fixing plate 1 and then depressing the portion between the slits to form a bridge part integral with the fixing plate. The end 16 of the spring 15 is bent to form a hook which engages the part 14, and the other end of the spring 15<SP>1</SP> is bent up and engaged in a hole in the shank 5. The stop plate 11 is secured to the shank by a circlip 12 and has an arcuate cut-away portion 13, one end 13<SP>1</SP> of which engages the part 14 in the inoperative position. A cover plate 18 is provided to conceal the part 14 and the fixing screws and has a flange 19 which is a friction fit over a flange 2 on the fixing plate 1. The friction fitting of the cover plate is improved by providing one or more projecting pips on the flange 2. Apart 14<SP>1</SP> is provided which corresponds to the part 14 to allow the door handle to be used for right or left-hand operation by employment of a suitable return spring. Instead of being formed as above the parts 14, 14<SP>1</SP> may be apertured bosses or curled-over eye parts.
