A luggage lock comprises a bolt 14 movable across a slot 16 with lock casing so as to be able to trap a hasp loop in the slot, the slot having a lug 28 struck up as an abutment to locate a hairpin spring 17 in position between the lug and a skirt of the bolt, the spring urging the bolt to the loop engaging position and providing an automatic latching action when the hasp is moved to the fastening position, the lug being- shaped to retain the spring against movement in a direction normal to the bolt and out of the bolt. In the construction shown the bolt is a shallow tray made as a pressing from sheet metal so that it has a peripheral skirt, and the spring has a pair of generally parallel limbs one of which lies along the peripheral skirt and contacts the latter at spaced positions, one on each side of a bolt nose 15. At said positions the peripheral skirt is inwardly dimpled, said dimples being located in the rim portion of the skirt remote from the flat planar base of the bolt and the dimples locate the spring and contact it near its edge remote from the base. The lug engages the opposite limb of the spring at a position approximately midway between the dimples the lug being curved and contacting the spring at its upper and lower edges. The lock casing has front and back plates between which the bolt is a sliding fit and a locking plate 18 is provided which is pivoted on a hollow boss provided on the back plate, the locking plate being engageable by a key to turn between two alternative positions in one of which it engages the bolt and holds it in the shot position and in the other of which it allows movement of the bolt against the spring. Secured to the bolt is a thumb piece 20 by which the bolt can be manually retracted from the exterior of the lock and the thumb piece journals a key selector plate 21.
