Abstract

1,140,794. Magnetic separators. ERIEZ MFG. CO. 3 Feb., 1967 [3 Feb., 1966], No. 5329/67. Heading B2J. A magnetic separator includes a magnet arrangement 20, Fig. 1, comprising a back bar or plate 24 to which are fixed spaced permanent main magnets 25, 29, each having a face spaced from the back bar and a pole adjacent its said face of opposite polarity from the pole adjacent thereto. Repelling magnets 60-63 are provided between the main magnets. A mixture 35 of magnetic and non-magnetic material is directed in close proximity to the faces of the magnets and through magnetic fields produced by the main magnets to separate the material. As described, a non-magnetic cylindrical shell 11 rotates on bearings about a shaft 12, driven by a motor, chain and sprocket 18, 17, 15. The fixed permanent magnet 20 is mounted concentrically with and inside the shell 11. In operation, the shell conveys material through the alternating magnetic field, so that the magnetizable material is rotated and remains attached to the shell until it comes to a portion past the pole 29, when the magnet 20 is no longer effective and the magnetic material falls off. Water is supplied via a conduit 37 to a chamber 36, the separated material is delivered by a chute 55, non- magnetic tailings via a pipe 54 and water via a pipe 48. Instead of separate water and material feeds there may be a direct feed of slurry. A further embodiment employs bucking magnets 206 . . . 209, Fig. 4, fixed to an adjustable magnetic back bar 300, which permits shaping and variation of the magnetic field in accordance with the characteristics of the material to be separated.
