Abstract

1389300 Magnetic separators NIPPON MINING CO LTD and S YASHIMA 20 July 1972 [20 July 1971 (2) 28 July 1971 11 Jan 1972] 34099/72 Heading B2J A wet type magnetic separator comprises a fixed magnet 1, constituted by a plurality of discoid permanent magnets each having similar recesses aligned to form an axially extending recess in the generally cylindrical magnet assembly which co-operates with a rotary drum 2 of non-magnetic material, the drum 2 being provided with a plurality of discrete pole pieces 3, e.g. of soft iron which, when within the influence of the magnet 1, help to produce a high flux density at the surface of the drum 2. The pole pieces 3 may comprise:- rods or spheres fixed by adhesive or welding to the drum 2, as shown; loose rods or spheres which in use are held against the drum 2 by the attraction of the magnet 1 (Fig. 2, not shown); rods or spheres held against the drum 2 by a covering net which extends wholly or partly round the circumference of the drum (Figs. 3A and 3B, not shown); an endless chain net, or a plurality of endless chains, co-operating with other rollers associated with the drum 2; a plurality of continuous or discontinuous rings attached to the surface of the drum 2 or fitted into grooves or apertures in the surface of the drum (Figs. 8 to 10, not shown); or a combination of rings and spheres (Fig. 11, not shown). Material to be treated is fed from a supply 4 to the drum 2, non-magnetic particles being collected in a hopper 5 whilst magnetic particles, whose removal from the drum is sided by a partition board 19, sprinklers 7b and an air blast from a pipe 20, are collected in a hopper 8.
