Abstract
1,120,013. Magnetic drum separators. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 24 May, 1966 [14 June, 1965], No. 23014/66. Heading B2J. [Also in Division H1] A magnetic ore separator comprises a plurality of permanent magnet units 10 assembled within a stainless steel cylindrical drum so as to remain stationary while the drum is rotated by a motor (77), Fig. 3 (not shown). Each permanent magnet unit is made up of pole members 1, 2, a main stack of magnets 11-16 which polarize pole members 1, 2 in opposite senses, two subsidiary stacks of magnets 17, 18 and 19, 21, and a yoke 3 of magnetic material, the arrangement being such that the main magnet stack is magnetically in parallel with the serially connected subsidiary stacks. For example if the stack 17, 18 and the main stack both present north poles to the pole member 1, the stack 19, 21 and the main stock present south poles to the other pole member 2, the two remaining poles of the subsidiary magnets being connected through the yoke 3 which provides a neutral polarity low reluctance path between the subsidiary stacks. In the magnetic ore separator, adjacent units 10 share pole members (121), (122), (123), Fig. 5 (not shown). Ore is pumped through an input conduit (62) Fig. 3 (not shown) whereupon magnetic constituents of the ore are attracted to the surface of the drum and carried round with drum and deposited in an outlet shaft (66). Non-magnetic constituents are not attracted and fall into a second outlet shaft (65).
