Abstract
1,134,171. Subhalide distillation process; alloys. ALUMINIUM LABORATORIES Ltd. Jan.13, 1966 [Feb.2, 1965], No.1737/66. Headings C7A and C7D. During the feeding of aluminium alloy granules from a hopper 30 to a converter 10, where the aluminium is extracted, the granules are preheated in sections 40, 41 by carbon or graphite electrodes 45, 46, 47, 48 whilst inducing mechanical pulsations in the mass of alloy granules during its passage through the pre-heating zone. Different voltages may be applied to the electrodes to allow for different resistivities in the alloy mass. The granules are supplied to the converter by a rotating table 43. Inert gas is supplied at 37 to the pre-heating column. To prevent entry of air and escape of gas the upper end of the column has locks with rotary valves 33, 34. The alloy has the following composition (per cent) Al 40 to 65, Fe 20 to 45, Si 2 to 20, Ti 2 to 6, C 3 to 6.
