Abstract

[Also in Division D1] A constant-speed driving arrangement for a washing machine includes an electromagnetic slip clutch with a transistor control circuit. In the drive shown an electric motor 54 is coupled to a depending vertical shaft 56 whose lower end is connected to a drain pump rotor 76 and which, through a slip clutch 40, drives an outer sleeve shaft 58. This shaft has large and small diameter portions 60, 62 engaged by the friction rollers (70, 68) of the spinner and agitator drive mechanisms. Fig. 4 (not shown). The clutch includes a coil 90 controlling the frictional engagement between driving and driven discs 100, 104, the latter including an outer drum portion 106 of which the lower periphery is formed with teeth 108 adjacent a magnet 112 within a tachometer signal coil 114. The transistor control circuit includes a transformer and rectifier unit 124, 126, 134, 136 connected to a speed signal circuit 180 including control and power transistors 192, 198 connected to the tachometer coil 114 and clutch coil 90, respectively. A timer controlled switch 176 may be connected to adjustable agitator or spinner speed control potentiometers 152, 156 in a programmer unit 148 to provide the necessary reference voltages. At the commencement of drive the current in the clutch coil 90 locks the friction discs 100, 104 to prevent slip, but as the speed increases slip occurs until a value is reached corresponding to the speed setting of the agitator or spinner potentiometer 152 or 156. Any subsequent load variation causing increase or decrease of the differential between the tachometer coil and reference voltages is detected by transistor 192 and amplifying resistances 212, 214 connected to the power transistor 198, which modifies the current in the clutch coil 90 to maintain the speed constant.
