Abstract

1,033,334. Sewing. SEWPRIMA Ltd. April 26, 1965 [May 1, 1964], No. 13371/64. Heading D1G. A sewing machine comprises first means connecting the main shaft to a motor for allowing drive to be imparted to the shaft in one sense and also independent rotation of the shaft in the same sense, and second means connecting the shaft to a remote driving mechanism for allowing drive to be imparted in one sense and also independent rotation of the shaft in said one sense. As shown, a pulley 4, driven by a motor via a belt 5, is connected to a sewing machine main shaft 1 by ratchet and pawl means allowing rotation of shaft 1 when pulley 4 is stationary. A pawl housing 18, rigid with shaft 1, co-operates with a ratchet wheel which is journalled on shaft 1 and which may be driven via gearing 17, 21 and a flexible shaft 8 by a friction roller 23 incorporated in a treadle 22 controlling the driving motor. The arrangement is thereby such that when pulley 4 is stationary, roller 23 may be actuated by the operators' foot for rotating shaft 1 to raise or lower the needle. A friction brake is incorporated to prevent overrun of shaft 1 when the drive ceases.
