Abstract

[Also in Division E1] A prefabricated frameless building is constructed by interconnecting large (e.g. 12 feet by 40 feet) internally-framed wall, ceiling, floor and roof panels, each panel comprising inner and outer skins of asbestos or scarf-jointed plywood sheets secured to a peripheral timber frame and to spaced timber studs within the frame, the spaces between the skins being filled with adherent foamed polyurethane. One or both of the skins may be extended to provide rebates or grooves for nailed and glued joints between panels, using intermediate splines, sole plates, tie plates &c., Figs. 4-9 and 14 (not shown). The panels may incorporate window and door frames, plastics service pipes, and wiring, and may have appropriate external and internal cladding. When used as basement walls, the panels are coated with polyurethane sealer and polyester resins. Non-load bearing partitions are formed of modified panels having a layer of felt in addition to the foam plastics. In the building shown the wall panels are bolted to pre-cast foundation beams 23, and the pitched roof panels are supported by an open truss 90 surmounted by a box beam.
