Abstract
487,370. Timber buildings. ROE, R. D., and HARTT, C. H. Oct. 6, 1937, No. 27059. [Class 20 (iv)] A wooden main or division wall is formed of solid wooden panels having plain flat ends which are engaged by stepped or channel-section sole and cap members, which locate and position the panels, and which present flat outer faces to abut against the ceiling joists or footings. Each panel comprises solid wooden core members 21, Fig. 2, having tongue and grooved side connections, one face of the panel being provided with bracing members 28 to which are secured the lining sheets 32, while the other face is covered with a layer of building-paper and vertical weatherboarding 26. For division wall panels both sides are covered with bracing members and lining sheets. The end members of the panels are also formed with tongues and grooves whereby the panels are joined together. The upper ends of the panels are received into the grooves of channel-section sill members 36 which are continuous, and which may be formed from solid wood or, as shown in Fig. 10, may be fabricated from battens. The sole members 37 for the main walls are stepped and their upper surfaces may be covered with metal flashing 75 ; the sole members for the division walls are of channel section. Both the sole and sill members may be formed of metal instead of wood. The sole members are supported on concrete footings 74 having air gratings 90, and weather strips 92 are secured in grooves in the lower sides of the sole-plates. The corner joints for the walls are stiffened by interfitting battens 48, 49, Fig. 4, and are covered by angle-section cover-pieces 51 ; the corner joints may be further strengthened by metal angle-pieces secured to the mitred ends of the sill members. Where a division wall abuts on a main wall, the lining of the main wall is cut away, so that the side of the divisional panel abuts directly upon the sides of the core members of the main panel, and the sill members are joined on their upper faces by T-shaped flat metal -connectors. Certain panels have interrupted core members for the reception of window and door frames, and a door panel for an outer wall may be formed with a grooved fabricated sole member to receive the edge of porch-flooring. The joists 53, Fig. 16, for an upper floor are grooved to receive the sill member 36 of the lower panels, and the space left between the upper sole member 83 and the lower sill member is filled in by weatherboarding 84. The horizontal and inclined roof beams are also grooved at their ends to receive the upper sill members of the wall panels.
