Abstract
1,120,571. Breech mechanism. OERLIKONBUHRLE HOLDING A.G. 4 March, 1966 [10 March, 1965], No. 9604/66. Heading F3C. An automatic firearm comprises a breech head, a breech housing wherein the breech head is relatively movable in an axial direction, at least one locking member arranged in the breech head by means of which the breech head is lockable in the breech housing; at least one recess provided in the breech housing into which the locking member projects when the breech head is locked. The firearm further comprises a control member for the looking member relatively movable from an ineffective position through an intermediate effective position to a breech head abutment position on the forward movement thereof (Figs. 1, 2, not shown). At least one brake for delaying the movement of the control member in the backward direction more than in the forward direction is also provided, the or each brake comprising a movable element 10 and a catch 51 with which the element engages in the abutment position of the control member and from which the element 10 disengages with movement of the control member from the abutment position up to the intermediate position. The movable element 10 and the catch 51 have friction surfaces 104, 105 and 53 respectively by means of which the control member is braked as the movable element 10 disengages from the catch. In the construction shown the catch 51 is in a sleeve 5 which is arranged to move with the control member, the movable, spring-loaded element 10 being received in the breech housing. The frictional forces of the locking elements, one brake being mounted at each side of the breech housing, are overcome by the thrust of a pair of unlocking rods 14. The brake may also comprise a spring-loaded member which frictionally co-operates with a recess within the breech head (Figs. 8, 9, not shown). The braking action is terminated before the breech head is unlocked.
