1,003,561. Clamps. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. July 24, 1964, No. 29800/64. Heading E2B. [Also in Divisions Fl and F2] Relates to the control of a ratchet clutch 63 (see Division F2). A shaft 40 is connected through a bearing to a non-rotary hollow rod 102 splined within the cup-shaped end 101 of an actuating rod 97 in turn splined within a fixed rod support 100. Axial grooves in the hollow rod 102 receive pairs of balls 107, 108 spring biased apart against wedge surfaces 111, 112 at the groove ends so that the balls lock the hollow rod to the support, preventing movement of the shaft 40. On up or down movement of the actuating rod 97, lost motion in a pin-and-slot, &c. or like connection 105 between the actuating and hollow rods is first taken-up, this motion moving the balls 107, 108 away from the wedge surfaces 111, 112. The hollow rod 102 is then free to move axially, together with the shaft 40, for disengagement, &c. of the ratchet clutch 63.
