Abstract

1,119,981. Bridges. B. M. HUTCHINSON. 22 April, 1966 [28 April, 1965], No. 17961/65. Heading E1G. A bridge comprises bridging elements 9 carried on supports 5, which can pivot about a horizontal axis 19, and span elements 11, the ends of the elements 9 and 11 cooperating to provide a bridge length which may be varied in height by the height of the pivots 19 and the angular position of the supports. The bridge may be in reinforced concrete or built from metal sections. The ends of the elements 9, 11 are chamfered and may have wedge distance pieces between them. Longitudinal I-beams 29 carry wooden battens covered with asphalt, the battens being releasable by clamping bolts at the carriageway centreline. A crash-barrier is provided by plastic covered wire mesh extending from a kerb board to the top of a guard rail 47. A half section of the bridge may be used to increase the width of a roadway cut in the side of a slope.
