Abstract

1,111,454. Bullets. INDUSTRIE WERKE KARLSRUHE A.G. 30 June, 1965 [28 Nov., 1964], No. 27793/65. Heading F3A. An infantry rifle bullet which has a jacket of deep-drawable sheet steel, the wall thickness of which along the ogive increases towards the tip, and a lead filling, combines the following features: (a) the ratio of the bullet length to the bullet calibre is approx. 4.6 : 1, and (b) the ratio of the bullet calibre to jacket wall thickness is approx. 22 : 1 on the driving body (i.e. the cylindrical trailing portion) of the bullet, increasing gradually on the ogive to approx. 14 : 1 and approx. 4À7 : 1 at the tip. In one particular bullet described by way of example, the jacket wall is 0À25 mm. thick in the driving body, increases gradually from 0À3 to 0À4 mm. thick in the ogive and is 1À2 mm. thick at the tip. The bullet has a calibre of 5À56 mm. and a diameter of 5À7 mm. at its driving body, being 26 mm. long with an ogive 16 mm. long. The cartridge is 57 mm. long and weights approx. 13 g. The bullet weighs approx. 5g. The jacket is of cupronickel or tombac plated deep-drawable sheet steel which is strain-hardened during manufacture of the bullet and the lead filling is alloyed with 2% by weight antimony so as to possesss the exact degree of deformability underneath the thin jacket of the driving body to enable the bullet to take up the high spin that is necessary to ensure flight stability.
