Abstract

1434034 Projectiles: ejecting bundles of radar-reflecting chaff F BENDER Ltd 11 July 1973 [11 July 1972] 32388/72 Headings F3A and F3C A cloud of radar-reflecting chaff is formed by ejecting bundles of radar-reflecting chaff from a projectile in flight. The projectile 10, Fig. 1, comprises a casing 11 and a nose 13 and has an aft portion 12 which houses propelling means (not shown). The casing 11 houses an explosive charge 15, a thrust disc 18 and a fuse assembly 16. The latter carries axially-spaced groups of explosive charges and supports an equal number of axially spaced groups of bundles 19 of radar reflecting chaff 20. Each bundle 19 is provided with a band 21 of stiff paper, for example, and with a fuse 22, Fig. 2. The fuse assembly 16 comprises a number of tubular elements secured together end to end. The end 17 is defined by an end tubular element 23 having a counterbore 24, a bore 26 and a screw-threaded boss 25 which is screwably attached to a tubular element 27. Each of the latter has a bore 29, a frusto-conical bore 31 and a bore 30. The bores 29 and 30 contain explosive material. Each element 27 has four circumferentially-spaced radial apertures 33 which communicate with its bore 29, the apetures 33 of alternate elements 27 being displaced angularly. Each band 21 has a metal inner arcuate portion with a projection 34 spigotted into the respective aperture 33 and each fuse 22 extends from the bore 29 into a stepped bore 35 which contains explosive material therein. In use the projectile 10 is launched and when it reaches the required position the explosive charge 15 is fired. This separates the nose 13 from the casing 11, ignites the explosive material in the bore 24 and forces the bundles 19 and the fuse assembly 16 out of the casing as shown in Fig. 1. The explosive material in the elements 23, 27 is ignited progressively and the respective bundle 19 disintegrates and the chaff is scattered within the atmosphere, the resultant cloud of chaff is substantially spherical.
