Abstract
A moulded body of alkali-metal hydroxide is produced by compacting solid alkali-metal hydroxide at a pressure of at least 100 kg./cm.2, with concomitant shaping. Preferably the compacting pressure is from 250 to 750 kg./cm.2 and the alkali-metal hydroxide is in the form of flakes. It is preferred to compact the alkali-metal hydroxide in a mould, which is heated to at least 80 DEG C. and preferably to 100-120 DEG C., to give a smooth surface to the moulded body. The surfaces of the tools are preferably treated with an antiadhesive agent, e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene. Prior to compacting, binding agents, e.g. the corresponding alkali-metal salts of long-chain saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, and of homopolymerized or copolymerized unsaturated monocarboxylic or dicarboxylic acids, may be added to the alkali-metal hydroxides, as may other additives, e.g. hydrophobing agents and dyestuffs.
