Abstract

1,146,980. Ultrasonic heating during moulding. RADYNE Ltd. 4 March, 1968 [9 Dec., 1966], No. 55324/66. Heading B5A. An article is moulded from thermoplastic material by applying ultrasonic vibratory energy to the material so that it is heated rapidly and at substantially the same time pressing the material into a mould to form it to the shape required. The apparatus used consists of a forming tool 8 coupled through a velocity transformer 7 to an ultrasonic transducer 5 and a die 1 which holds a pellet 3 of the thermoplastic material. The forming tool 8 is brought into contact with the pellet 3, ultrasonic vibratory energy is applied to the pellet via the forming tool which also presses the material. A frequency at 15 kc/s. to 40 kc/s. is suitable. An example is given using a polythene pellet. The forming tool and die are water cooled. The vibrations may be applied through the die.
