Abstract
An extruded or moulded asbestos-cement article is produced by incorporating in an asbestos-cement mix a C14- 20-chain-containing water-insoluble compound as a plasticizer and then extruding or moulding the plasticized mix. The plasticizer may be a fatty acid, acid anhydride or amide, or a metallic salt or lower alkyl ester of a fatty acid, or an alcohol; it may be a thermally dimerized C14- 20 unsaturated fatty acid, which may be hydrogenated. Exemplified are oleic, linolic, palmitic, and stearic acids. Natural drying oils are not used as plasticizers. The mix may contain 0.1-5.0% wt. based on dry ingredients of the plasticizer. The mix to which plasticizers are to be added may consist, by dry weight, of asbestos 6-25%; cement, 40-90%; silica, 0-30%; lime, 0-30%; other fibres, 0-15%; fillers, pigments &c., 0-30%. The ingredients may be slurried for the "wet" process by using a Halschek or Mazza machine, with up to 20 parts water by wt., or mixed for "dry" extrusion with as little as 15% water.ALSO:An extruded or moulded asbestos-cement article is produced by incorporating in an asbestos-cement mix a C14-20-chain-containing water-insoluble compound as a plasticizer mix.
