Abstract

1,100,416. Making wire, rolling wire. SOUTHWIRE CO. 19 Oct., 1966 [20 Oct., 1965] No. 46685/66. Heading B3A and B3M. A method of making a hot formed copperbase product having a grain structure characterized by uniformly distributed fine grains with substantially no grain alignment, said method comprising the steps of casting a copper-base metal and hot-forming the metal, in the condition in which it solidified, by deforming the metal alternately into a plurality of cross-sections which include a flattened and elongated cross-section and a round crosssection so as to impart movement to the metal along a plurality of angularly disposed axes. A tough pitch copper wire is produced by continuously casting a suitable metal in a wheel and belt machine 10 and taking the metal as it solidifies to a rolling mill 11 in which it is rolled to the cross-sections shown in Fig. 2. The rolling mill may be preceded by a furnace for adjusting the temperature of the cast metal 12. Photo-micrographs, Figs. 4 to 6 (not shown), and X-ray transmission difffraction pinhole patterns, Figs. 8 to 15 (not shown), are given, which illustrate the grain structure obtained with the method described and compare it with the grain structure obtained by different methods.
