Abstract
1,119,770. Making copper wire. SOUTH WIRE CO. 19 Oct., 1966 [20 Oct., 1965], No. 46684/66. Heading B3A. A method of making a hot formed copper-base product having only uniformly dispersed copper-oxide inclusions comprises the steps of continuously solidifying molten copper-base metal in a closed wheel-type casting machine mould to obtain cast metal and initiating the hot-forming of the cast metal while it is in the condition in which it solidified, by maintaining the temperature of the cast metal at the solidifying temperature, which is within a range of temperatures for hot-forming the metal. Metal of a composition suitable for the production of tough pitch copper wire is continuously cast in a wheel and belt machine 13 and the solidified metal 14 is passed directly into a rolling mill 25. A furnace 15 may be provided to maintain the wire at its solidifying temperature. With this arrangement there is no set surface or surface concentration of copper oxide and photo-micrographs of transverse and longitudinal cross-sections are given, Figs. 2, 5, 8 and 11 (not shown) to illustrate the even dispersion of the copper oxide throughout the material, and the uniform fine-grained structure.
