Abstract
1,098,009. Mixing apparatus. BASKERVILLE & LINDSAY Ltd. Nov. 16, 1966 [Sept. 29, 1965]. No. 41364/65. Heading B1C. A stirrer inside a pressure vessel is driven through a magnetic coupling. The stirrer shaft 17 is fixed to a shaft 14 inside a non-magnetic (e.g. stainless steel) tube 9, with a closed end 10 attached by studs 2 to the pressure vessel (not shown), and co-operating magnets 32 and 30 are fixed respectively to the shaft 14 inside the tube, and to a sleeve 27 surrounding the tube and driven by a drive belt 29. To indicate that the stirrer shaft is actually rotating, a further magnetic coupling is provided between an extension 51 of the shaft 14 inside the tube 9, and a sleeve 46 surrounding the tube. The sleeve is fixed to a shaft 45 whose rotation can be observed, or (as shown) which leads to a tacho-generator 42. The magnets 32, 30 are U-magnets, and the magnets 48, 47 on the shaft 51 and sleeve 46 are either U-magnets or (as shown), ring magnets magnetised with opposite poles diametrically opposed.
