An ice cream stirrer 11 is mounted in a closed container 18 and driven from outside by a magnetic coupling, so that the container is not penetrated by a rotating shaft. The coupling comprises permanent magnets 7a, 7b on yokes 6, 9 in housing rotatably mounted on a bearing pin 14 passing through the container wall, and the outer housing 5 is fixed to a pulley 2. The magnets 7a may alternatively be electromagnets. The inner body 8 is slidably mounted on the pin 14 so that it can be readily removed, and is retained on it by the magnetic forces.
