Fibres supplied to a vertical shaft forming a feed element of a textile machine are conveyed in an air stream from which they are separated while being maintained in open condition by extracting part of the air from the air stream at the upper end of the vertical shaft. The initial air stream carries fibres through a duct 5 to an area immediately above the vertical feed shaft and which is partially bounded by screens 6, 6' within a compartment from which air is positively exhausted through ducts 7. Adjacent to the screens the cross-section of the duct 5 increases considerably, resulting in a reduction in the velocity of the air stream and a slowing of fibre movement. The rate at which air is extracted through the ducts 7 is slightly less than the rate at which it is supplied through duct 5, in consequence of which fibres tend to float within the area bounded by the screens until removed by a flap 11 that is mounted to rotate through 360‹ and to reverse its movement when in its lower vertical position. Mounted on the same shaft as flap 11 for partial rotation therewith through a slipping clutch arrangement is another flap 12 which has the effect of partially closing the screen area from the vertical feed shaft beneath. This flap 12 is also utilised as a detector which is affected by the presence of fibres at the top of the feed shaft in order temporarily to cut off the fibre supply from a preceding machine. An arrangement of push buttons 14, 14', 15, 15' and stops 16, 17, 19 associated with the two flaps are effective to this end.
