Abstract

Chrome steel fibres are coated with alloying components containing Mo and/or Cu and/or V and/or Ta and/or Ti, homogenized by diffusion annealing and compacted to shape. The chrome steel may contain Ni and/or Mn and by carrying out the annealing in a nitrogen containing atmosphere nitrogen can be introduced as an alloying constituent. The homogenized fibres may also be silicized. In the Examples Cr-Ni steel fibres are chromized in H2 and HCl gas at 1200 DEG C., ferro-vanadium being added to the Cr or ferro chromium used. Alternatively chromium chloride containing 10% vanadium chloride is used. Annealing was carried out at 1300 DEG C. in H2 containing 10% NH3 and 1% HCl. Coating with Mo may be effected by deposition from molybdenum halides in H2 or electrolytic deposition from an aqueous solution of trivalent molybdenum compounds.
