Abstract

107,791. Hall, L. B. July 6, 1916. Piston pumps.-In apparatus for regulating internal - combustion engines &c., of the kind in which a pulsating device produces pulsations in a column of gas between the pulsator and a governing device, a retaining valve RV is inserted in the gas column Q between the compression space PC of the pulsator and the governing device CP for the fuel pump &c. The pulsator comprises a piston PP reciprocating in a cylinder which, at the bottom of the piston stroke, is connected by ports 0 to a pipe p communicating with a part of the engine. The part may be the inlet pipe in which gas under pressure proportionate to the weight of the compressible charge per stroke exists, or the pipe p may communicate with the outer air. Any change in the conditions of the charge in or for the engine produces a change in the condition of the gas in the pulsator during the compression stroke, and this pressure change in the pulsator produces a change in the pressure of the gas in the colunm Q when the valve RV is momentarily opened during the compressing stroke, and thereby varies the position of the governing-device CP. The pulsator may be driven by a cam which causes the piston to pause at the end of its stroke, or by a crank, in which case a second valve is inserted between the pulsator and the device CP to prevent considerable changes in the pressure in the pipe Q. The pulsator may vary the stroke of the fuel pump R of the engine. Specification 17968/15, [Class 102 (i), Pumps &c.], is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, a spring-loaded piston or wall may be arranged in the campression space of the pulsator.
