Abstract

1,074,207. Grinding. ULVSONDA VERKSTADER A.B. June 26, 1964 [June 27, 1963], No. 26511/64. Heading B3D. A grinding machine in which the workpiece is carried by a rotary chuck is controlled by means sensing the elastic deformation of the grinding wheel spindle, e.g. occurring when the wheel comes into contact with the workpiece. A workpiece 16 rotated by a chuck 20 is internally ground by a grinding wheel 14 which is axially reciprocated and moved radially. Pressurized gas, e.g. air, from a conduit 28 escapes from an orifice 42 in a member 24 closely surrounding the grinding wheel spindle 12, the member 24 being part of a member 22 secured to the wheelhead 10. At the beginning of a cycle, the grinding wheel is advanced rapidly towards the workpiece. When the grinding wheel contacts the workpiece, the tangential force (K2) deflects the spindle 12 towards the orifice 42, and the resultant pressure increase actuates a bellows 48, whereby an indicator 64 is operated and contacts 70, 72 are closed so transmitting a signal to the feed mechanism which automatically changes from rapid advance to feed rate. The member 24 has a second orifice (88) for the escape of air supplied from a conduit 74. The pressure in the conduit leading to the orifice (88) is communicated to a bellows 92 and the pressure in the conduit leading to the orifice 42 is communicated to a bellows 96. With a properly dressed wheel the deflection caused by the tangential force (K2) is equal or substantially so to that caused by the radial force (K1) and the pressures in the bellows 92, 96 remain balanced. If the grinding wheel requires dressing, force (K1) exceeds force (K2) so that the pressure in bellows 92 exceeds that in bellows 96 whereby an indicator 104 is operated and contacts 110, 112 are closed so transmitting a signal which automatically stops the feed; the grinding wheel is moved out of the workpiece and dressed. The deflection of the grinding wheel spindle 12 may be used to control the feed rate during grinding.
