Abstract

790,144. Grinding. KONG, C. Aug. 17, 1955 [Aug. 18, 1954], No. 23717/55. Class 60. In a surface grinder having a cyclically moving worktable and a grinding wheel fed towards the workpiece during grinding, the feed of the wheel is controlled by a feeler operated during each cycle of the worktable by a control member carried by the worktable, the arrangement being such that when the grinding wheel reaches the position corresponding to the desired finished dimension of the workpiece it has moved the the control member to a position such that it does not operate the feeler, so that the feed stops. The workpieces 2 are held electromagnetically on a grinding table 1 rotating under a grinding wheel 3. A control block 6 is frictionally held in a casing 7 on the periphery of the table 1 and carries an insert 6a of wear-resistant material for co-operating with the tip 11 of a feeler 4 adjustably mounted on a stationary part of the machine. Feed of the grinding wheel is controlled by contacts 9, 10 the contact 9 being secured by bar 14 to the feeler tip 11. Initially, the feeler 4 is adjusted so that the tip 11 is located in a plane containing the upper surface of the finished workpieces 2 on the table 1. The control block 6 is then set so that the upper surface of the insert 6a is above this plane. Thus at each rotation of the table 1 the insert 6a operates the feeler 4 to effect feed of the grinding wheel ; eventually, the grinding wheel depresses the control block 6 to a position such that the feeler is not operated and feed stops. A motor or time switch can be used to render the machine inoperative and return it to its starting position. The control block 6 is returned to its initial position as determined by a nut 8.
