Abstract

1,070,753. Refrigerating. CARRIER CORPORATION. Aug. 5, 1964 [Nov. 15, 1963], No. 31861/64. Heading F4H. In a refrigeration system comprising a compressor 12 having a lubricant sump 24 communicating via line 25 with the suction line 28, means are provided for preventing more than a predetermined reduction of the pressure in the sump and hence for preventing violent boiling of refrigerant therein. As shown such means comprise adjustable capacity control vanes 30 in compressor inlet conduit 26 and a float 72 responsive to the oil level in the sump for actuating vanes 30 via a switch 70 which controls valves 62, 64 in lubricant supply lines to a pneumatic device 50. The vanes are arranged to be moved towards their closed position by device 50 when violet boiling of refrigerant in the sump causes the liquid level to rise and move float 72. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) a second float is provided above the first, the latter being arranged to actuate device 50 in such a manner that further opening of the vanes is prevented and the second float being arranged to cause the vanes to close on further rise in the liquid level. In a second modification (Fig. 5, not shown) a single float is immersed in the liquid in the sump and actuates switch 70 in response to variations in the liquid density.
