Abstract

1,060,252. Machine frames; drilling machines. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept. 10, 1964 [Sept. 10, 1963], No. 37164/64. Headings B3B and B3C. [Also in Divisions F2 and G6] A drilling chamber 2 for irradiated tubes and served by two drill heads 27-28 is surrounded by a three-part lead biological radiation shield l 1 , l 3 and (1 2 ), Fig. 1 (not shown), and connected to atmosphere by a loading chamber 3 fed from an entrance 7 sealed by a rotatable lead drum 5 with a diametral bore 5, transverse to the entrance 7 when the chamber 3 is sealed and rotatable by an external telescopic arm 13 to align the bore 5 1 with the entrance 7 for loading the chamber 3. The irradiated tubes 18 are pulled through the sealing drum 5 on to a cradle 17 by an externally operated rod (24), Fig. 4 (not shown), and the trolley 14 mounting the cradle 17 is moved into alignment with the drilling chamber 2 by an externally operated rod (19). The tube 18 and its cradle 17 are then pushed off the trolley 14 by an externally operatedrod (35) into the drilling chamber 2 which is then sealed off from the loading chamber 3 by an externally operated gate (22). (Fig. 4, not shown). The tube is pushed on to a mandrel 29 which is axially and rotatably movable by means of an external head screwwheel (33) and bevel gears (35), (35 1 ). Before drilling, the chamber 2 is evacuated, which draws the sealing gate (22) on to the end of the chamber. The vertical motor-driven drill arbors (36) of the drill heads 27, 28 bear through a spring thrust bearing. (46), Fig. 6 (not shown), on a non-rotatable drill guide and clamping block (44) so that as the arbor descends under hand power to drill the tube the latter is firmly clamped. The arbors (36) are connected to belt-driven pulleys by screw-threads, allowing axial movement of the pulleys on the arbors. The block (44) is sprung away from the tube 18. Different sized tubes may be accommodated by different sized cradles to maintain the tube centre distance relative to the drill arbors. The gaseous fusion products from the drilled irradiated tubes 18 are led off for analysis. The drill chamber 2 has observation windows (56) and (57), Fig. 1 (not shown), and the front radiation shield (1 2 ) has a corresponding slit (55) and a similar one (54) for the loading chamber 3 with glass viewing blocks.
